What is the Selphyl process?
The Selphyl System is a new approach to anti-aging treatment which allows a trained physician to prepare a Platelet-rich Fibrin Matrix to use as a dermal filler using blood collected from the patient during an office visit. Using a centrifuge and a chemical catalyst, the doctor is able to use only the platelets and fibrin in facial rejuvenation.
How is PRFM different from PRP?
PRP, by definition is platelets and plasma, where the platelet concentration is generally considered to be twice the normal. PRP should have little to no red blood cells and white blood cells. By adding the precise amount of calcium chloride, the SELPHYL® System can convert the liquid PRP into PRFM, a gel-like matrix. This occurs because the calcium chloride initiates the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin, as part of the clotting cascade. The fibrin matrix serves as a three dimensional scaffold to maintain the platelets at the site of injection. The main advantages and benefits of PFRM include:
- High degree of purity
- Reproducibility of the treatment
- Confidence in knowing exactly what is being injected
- Safety profile
What makes the Selphyl System work?
Selphyl is a natural autologous preparation which the body readily accepts. When injected just under the skin, it activates new skin cell growth and, over time, leads to a stronger collagen support . Selphyl prompts new cells to grow and spread throughout the treatment area.

What areas of the body can be treated successfully with Selphyl?
Selphyl can be used to give a fuller appearance to the face or hands. It can diminish the scars left by acne and greatly improve the lines around the mouth and nose which develop with time. Selphyl may be used on any area of the body which needs to be plumped or to create areas with more definition.
What are the benefits of Selphyl compared to other similar treatments?
The fact that Selphyl is created from the patient’s own body is the biggest advantage this system offers. This means allergic reactions almost never occur. The Selphyl process is finished in twenty minutes or less and is rarely uncomfortable. Selphyl stays fluid under the skin so there is never a need to be concerned about unsightly knots or clumping. The entire Selphyl process takes place in a doctor’s office and requires no general anesthesia. Because Selphyl does not burn or blister the face, infection is unlikely.
Who can be treated with Selphyl?
Patients of all ethnicities are candidates for Selphyl treatment. Doctors do feel that the Selphyl system should not be used on anyone already dealing with blood clotting issues or those who are presently on blood thinning medications.
What happens at an appointment for Selphyl treatment?
First, blood will be drawn from the patient’s vein. Only 9cc of blood is needed to provide Selphyl for each treatment. After using the patient’s blood to prepare the filler, the aesthetic physician will inject Selphyl into the treatment area. It is placed just under the skin, but some doctors also choose to use a local anesthetic to prevent any discomfort.
What is the recovery after Selphyl treatment like?
Recovery after Selphyl treatment is relatively easy. Pain medication is not required, and the patient will only experience mild swelling and bruising for a day or two. A few may also have minor itching, but this is only a mild irritation.
What will I see after Selphyl treatment?
After two to three weeks, the treated area will look smoother as new cells fill in under the epidermis. The improvement seen will continue for several weeks until signs of aging are greatly diminished.
Is the Selphyl System approved for use in the U.S.?
The FDA approved Selphyl for use by trained providers in the United States, and it has also been certified as safe in Europe.
Is Selphyl treatment covered by insurance companies?
Major insurance companies consider Selphyl treatment to be cosmetic and refuse coverage on this basis. Providers do sometimes agree to stretch payments over an extended period of time. It is best to ask about financing before the first Selphyl treatment
How is SELPHYL® different than the “Vampire Facelift”?
SELPHYL® is not affiliated in any way with the term “Vampire Facelift,” that was coined by the media to describe PRP treatments. The Vampire FaceLift® Procedure™ is a specific technique that combines hyaluronic acid fillers (i.e., Restylane® and Juvederm®) with “blood-derived growth factors” from another brand of PRP. This procedure has been trademarked by Charles Runels, M.D.What clinical data has been published about the science of PRFM?
Clinical studies published to date include:Sclafani AP. Platelet-rich Fibrin Matrix for improvement of deep nasolabial folds, Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology. 2010;9.
